В статье продолжается исследование «Страстей св. Сусанны» (Passio S. Susannae, BHL 7937) как текста V–VI вв., написанного с многочисленными отклонениями от классического языка. Разбираются отдельные встречающиеся в рукописях «неклассические» черты языка, связанные с синтаксисом: употребление si в прямом вопросе, употребление nihil... quam в значении nihil aliud... quam, целевое ut с инфинитивом, употребление non с инфинитивом в значении отрицательного императива.
Textual Notes on the Passio Nazarii, Celsi, Geruasii et Protasii (BHL 6043)

In her critical edition of the Passio Nazarii, Celsi, Geruasii et Protasii (BHL 6043), a text dated to the 6th or 7th century AD and probably translated from Greek, Cecile Lanéry introduces several conjectural changes aimed at language standardization. The author of the present article takes issue with several of her conjectures and suggests that in each case the transmitted text actually stands criticism and should probably be left unchanged. At 2.3, the transmitted alapas is not to be changed to alapis with percutio, since percutio with both the accusative of direct object and the accusative of a word meaning “blow” is several times reliably attested in the Vetus Latina, and in one of these instances the word used for “blow” is actually alapa. At 5.1, et in the expression uocans Nazarium et dixit ei should not be deleted, since there are numerous parallels for this syntax in Late Latin. At 8.2, in carcerem is to be retained as a possible way to describe position in Late Latin, whether confusion of expressions denoting position and direction or hypercorrect graphic -m is at issue. At 12.1, the form imperatori is to be retained as a possible orthographic variant for the ablative in Late Latin.

An Unpublished Letter from Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff to Grigory E. Saenger

В статье осуществляется издание ранее не публиковавшегося письма Ульриха фон Виламовиц-Меллендорффа Григорию Эдуардовичу Зенгеру (1853– 1919), отечественному филологу-классику. Текст письма сопровожден вступлением, англоязычным переводом и краткими примечаниями. Письмо на немецком языке, сохранившееся в Архиве Российской Академии Наук (Москва), Ф. 504, Оп. 4, Ед. хр. 314, Л. 1–2, датируется 22 июля 1909 г. и является ответом на посылку Зенгером Виламовицу экземпляра своего издания «Сильв» Стация 1909 г. Виламовиц не дает детальной оценки изданию, но вместо этого формулирует свое общее отношение к подходу Зенгера и к ситуации с текстологией «Сильв» в целом. Зенгер, противостоящий консервативному подходу издания Фридриха Фолльмера 1898 г., делает ставку на радикальную конъектуральную правку текста; Виламовиц также критически смотрит на издание Фолльмера, но при этом выступает за то, чтобы видеть в странностях парадосиса «Сильв» в целом скорее смелые решения поэта, чем испорченный текст.
An Unpublished Letter by A. E. Housman Related to the Textual Criticism of Statius’ Siluae

The article presents an edition of the previously unpublished letter from A. E. Housman to Grigory E. Saenger, written in Latin and dated 28 May, 1909, as well as a commentary on this text. The letter contains a criticism of Saenger’s 1909 edition of Statius’ Siluae. Housman evaluates the general approach of the edition and pronounces his judgement on two particular decisions made by the editor. The commentary treats both the general context of the letter and particular statements made by Housman. The approach recommended by Housman is compared to those adopted in the major post-Saengerian editions of the Siluae; it is suggested that, while in certain respects some of the modern editions come close to what Housman endorsed, in other ways there is nothing among them to compare with it.

В статье публикуется ряд не появлявшихся ранее в печати конъектур к т. н. Appendix Vergiliana (корпусу произведений, приписывавшихся Вергилию помимо трех канонических) трех ученых, работавших в Российской империи: Федора Евгеньевича Корша (1843–1919), Григория Эдуардовича Зенгера (1853–1919) и Адольфа Израилевича Сонни (1861–1922). Вероятно, все конъектуры датируются между 1901 и 1919 гг.; они сохранились в переписке трех ученых и в рукописных записях Зенгера на полях оттисков его собственных работ в научных архивах Зенгера и Корша (Архив Российской Академии Наук, Москва, фонды 504 и 558 соответственно).
Identifying Latin Authors through Maximum-Likelihood Dirichlet Inference: A Contribution to Model-Based Stylometry

The last two decades saw a dramatic increase in the number of papers published on the subject of stylometry, which is often narrowly understood as the task of identification of the author of a particular text fragment based on its stylistic properties. We present a new lightweight algorithm for stylometric identification of authors of Latin prose texts based on Burrows’s Delta, computed over relative frequencies of 244 manually selected genre and topic neutral words, and the Dirichlet distribution, whose parameters we estimate using an iterative maximum-likelihood algorithm. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, we present a case study of 3000-word fragments of texts by 36 classical and medieval authors and show that our method performs on par with Random Forest, a powerful general-purpose classification algorithm. We provide summary statistics of our algorithm’s performance together with confusion matrices demonstrating pairwise discriminability of texts by different authors. The advantages of our method are that it is very simple to implement, very quick to train and do inference with, and that it is very interpretable since it is a model-based algorithm: precision of the fitted Dirichlet distributions directly corresponds to the stylistic homogeneity of the texts by different authors. This makes it possible to use the algorithm as a general research tool in Latin stylistics.
The Helen Episode in Aeneid 2: Between Authorial Poetry and Anonymity

It is suggested that in the debates about the authenticity of the so-called 'Helen Episode' in Aeneid 2 (Verg. Aen. 2.567-88), the stronger points of both the defenders of the authenticity of the episode and the scholars who treat it as a late interpolation are reconcilable if we imagine that the episode was added in the first edition of the poem by L. Varius Rufus who was the editor to fill an obvious lacuna. This scenario implies an interesting combination of a self-consciously anonymised approach and elements of authorial poetry, which might account for some of the problems connected with the text.

В статье продолжается исследование «Страстей св. Сусанны» (Passio S. Susannae, BHL 7937) как текста V–VI вв., написанного с многочисленными отклонениями от классического языка. Разбираются встречающиеся в рукописях «неклассические» черты языка, связанные с употреблением падежей и с категорией рода: употребление предложных конструкций на месте ожидаемых форм косвенных падежей без предлогов, генерализация аккузатива, употребление номинатива в значении аккузатива, «неклассический» род существи- тельных, употребление прилагательных мужского рода при согласовании с местоимениями среднего рода, «неклассические» употребления родовых форм относительного местоимения.
