THE ROLE OF THE NATURAL SEMANTIC METALANGUAGE IN DEFINING THE MEANING OF THE CULTURAL CONCEPTS MERAK, KAIF, AND INAT Summary In this paper, we describe the approach of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage towards the representation of semantic information in lexicography. We focus on the properties of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage that can improve the presentation of semantic information in dictionaries. We illustrate those properties with the semantic analysis of the cultural concepts merak (‘relish’) and inat (‘spite’) in Serbian, and kaif (‘pleasure’) in Russian

Hypocrisy and the media coverage of poverty
2021 · CHAPTER · en
The objective of the research presented in this paper is to demonstrate the interplay between hypocrisy, the construction of news values, and evaluation in the newspaper coverage of poverty. Hypocrisy is a complex, multifaceted concept, but most investigators agree that hypocrisy involves some sort of inconsistency between attitudes and behaviors. Decisions about which behaviors actually contradict the actor’s attitudes are likely to be strongly influenced by the value system that belongs to the actor (Alicke et al. 2013: 678). Since the media fulfills an important role in shaping public attitudes toward poverty, in this paper, we would like to compare representations of poverty in two broadsheet newspapers in English and Russian: The New York Times and Nezavisimaya Gazeta. Based on the observations of Thompson and Hunston (2000: 6–7) that one of the three functions of evaluation is to reflect a value system, we turn to the framework for a linguistic analysis of news discourse presented in Bednarek (2006) and Bednarek and Caple (2017). The above methodology provides the means to find out what values are emphasized (foregrounded), rare or absent (backgrounded). The objective of the paper is threefold. Firstly, we investigate whether some attitudes expressed in the newspapers reflect hypocrisy and whether this hypocrisy is repeatedly associated with particular news values, such as Negative, Novel, etc., and, if so, what the effect of this may be. Secondly, we analyze attitudinal expressions that are employed to express hypocrisy (Bednarek 2006, Martin and White 2005). Thirdly, we use qualitative discourse analysis presented by Baker and Vessey (2018) to determine how hypocrisy in media coverage of poverty in two languages draws upon similar and distinct discursive themes and language resources. In order to fulfill our goals, we implement the following techniques: analysis of the frequency of word forms and clusters, analysis of keywords, collocation analysis, and concordancing. Our preliminary corpus analysis shows that the news values that can be construed by linguistic devices associated with hypocrisy, Negativity, Impact, and Consonance appear to be foregrounded in both languages. In accordance with that, the linguistic devices that are mostly used are the ones that have reference to the negative aspects of events with real, important, and relevant consequences, and the ones that indicate stereotypes that people may hold about the portrayed people/events.
Exploring the news discourse on the energy sector in the Russian and the US newspapers
2021 · CHAPTER · en
In this comparative study, we investigate the linguistic devices that may be used to construct news values in the news items related to the energy sector in the Russian and the US broadsheet newspapers Kommersant and The New York Times. Based on the observations of Thompson and Hunston (2000: 6–7) that one of the three functions of evaluation is to reflect a value system, we turn to the framework for a linguistic analysis of news discourse presented in Bednarek (2006) and Bednarek and Caple (2012a,b, 2017). This framework is situated within the discursive approach and is to be regarded as complementary to cognitive approaches that take news values as socially-shared cognitive representations (Van Dijk, 1988). The above methodology provides the means to find out what values are emphasized (foregrounded), rare, or absent (backgrounded). The objective of the paper is twofold. Firstly, we investigate whether a given topic on the energy sector is repeatedly associated with particular news values, such as Negative, Novel, Elite, etc., and, if so, what the effect of this may be. Secondly, we analyze attitudinal expressions that are employed to make events more newsworthy. After that, we compare the results from both newspapers since there is no claim that the same resources would work across languages. In order to fulfill the first objective, we use the following techniques for the news values analysis: analysis of the frequency of word forms and clusters, analysis of keywords, semantic tags, dispersion analysis, and concordance. For our second objective, the analysis of attitudinal expressions, we deploy a combination of the two frameworks: The Appraisal framework (Martin & White 2005) and the parameter-based framework of evaluation (Bednarek 2006). The corpus which we annotated includes news items containing 20,000 words for each language for the period of the last three years. Our preliminary corpus analysis shows that the news values that can be construed by linguistic devices associated with attitude, Negativity, Superlativeness, and Timeliness appear to be foregrounded in both languages, while the events are constructed as negative, having significant effects and timely in relation to the publication date. In accordance with that, the linguistic devices that are mostly used are the ones that have reference to the events that have real, important, and relevant consequences, devices that refer to negative evaluative language, and the ones that indicate change or current trends.

AUTHORIAL STANCE EXPRESSED WITH GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES IN EDITORIALS AND ONLINE COMMENTS IN RUSSIAN S u m m a r y This paper describes major patterns of register variation between editorials and online news comments based on the use of a wide range of lexico-grammatical structures that express stance in Russian. While applying the methodology of Biber (Biber 2006), the objective of the paper is to make a distinction between the two registers that is related to the occurrence of the structures, such as modals, adverbs, verbs, and adjectives with certain types of semantic meaning within a corpus of 10,000 words from each register. The results show that there are important register differences in the particular kinds of stance meanings that are expressed in editorials and online comments. The focus of editorials is on the author’s perspective that characterizes certain actions or events, and to a lesser extent on speech acts and on anticipatory aspects of texts, while the focus of online comments is on the epistemic and directive dimensions of stance.

SIGNALIZATION OF DISCOURSE RELATIONS IN THE SERBIAN AND RUSSIAN NEWSPAPER TEXTS Summary This paper presents a collection of groups of signals that mark coherence relations within the corpus of newspaper articles on cultural events from the broadsheet newspapers Politika online and Nezavisimaya Gazeta in Serbian and in Russian. We find the following groups of signals: discourse markers, morphological, semantic, and syntactic markers, genre, graphic signals, and combined signals. Both languages share the same categorization of signals that overlaps with the taxonomy created based on newspaper articles on politics and the economy.

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the semantic analysis of twelve adjectives with affective and experiential meanings in Serbian and in Russian based on the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (Goddard and Wierzbicka 2014; Goddard et al. 2019). We suggest that a basic distinction between the two above-mentioned groups of adjectives can be established thanks to the presence of a different number of psychological dimensions that characterize emotional space (Fontaine et al. 2013).
Positive Appraisal in online news comments
2020 · CHAPTER · en
This chapter investigates the linguistic expression of positive evaluation in English and describes a preliminary typology of linguistic devices used for positive evaluation. Using corpus-assisted analysis, we classify some of the resources that play a role in the expression of positive evaluation into phenomena in the lexicogrammar and phenomena that belong in discourse semantics and compare those resources to the ones deployed for negative evaluation (see the work on negative evaluation in Taboada et al. in Corpus Pragmat, 1:57–76, 2017). This general classification of evaluative devices overlaps with the planes of expression in systemic functional linguistics. Our data comes from a collection of opinion articles and the comments associated with them (Kolhatkar et al., in the SFU Opinion and Comments Corpus: A corpus for the analysis of online news comments, under review). We use a set of 1000 comments previously annotated for Appraisal (Martin and White in The language of evaluation. Palgrave, New York, 2005), including labels of Attitude (Affect, Judgement, Appreciation) and polarity (positive, negative, neutral). The central component of the chapter is the analysis of the resources used by commenters to express positive evaluation. We explore whether they make use of rhetorical figures, following up on our work with Cliff Goddard on the use of rhetorical figures in the expression of negative evaluation (Taboada et al. in Corpus Pragmat, 1:57–76, 2017). We then analyse the semantics of evaluative adjectives using the natural semantic metalanguage approach and follow our previous work on templates that capture different types of adjectives and fall into five groups (Goddard et al., in Funct Lang 26, 2019). Although our corpus analysis is limited, and it includes only a specific type of data (online news comments), the phenomena that we discuss are present across different genres of texts. While our previous work has focused on how to express negative evaluation, this chapter seeks to honour Cliff Goddard and his positive influence by studying how positivity is realized in language.
Реторичка структурална теорија и елементарне јединице дискурса у српском и руском језику

In this paper, we develop the analysis of discourse relations on the basis of Rhetorical Structure Theory (MannThompson 1988) on the corpus of online news comments which are published in the Serbian broadsheet Politika Online and the Russian site Russia Today. We look at the way and the frequency of discourse relations are signalized in Serbian and Russian. The analysis shows that signalization of discourse relations in both languages is relatively frequent, while discourse markers are by far not the only signals that announce them.
