The representation of the climate crisis in Croatian online news media

This study analyzes agency and news values across verbal and visual modalities in Croatian online news on the climate crisis, examining how climate change is portrayed. We explore newsworthiness, visual framing, and metaphor, linking agency to broader concerns about responsibility. In addition, the analysis traces how different types of agency shape news values in both metaphorical and nonmetaphorical micro-contexts. To achieve our goals, we employ four theoretical frameworks: Transitivity model; Conceptual Metaphor Theory and subsequent extensions; news values analysis, and climate-change visual framing (O’Neill et al., 2013). The findings reveal a contradictory picture. Croatian online media primarily evoke worry, reinforced by the news values of Impact and Negativity and by frequent portrayals of humanity as the Goal in both texts and images. Metaphorical framings follow a clear pattern: individuals appear as victims facing stronger adversaries, while abstract entities such as the climate crisis and climate change are depicted as malevolent agents in a dominant war scenario. News stories rarely highlight initiatives that might foster a sense of agency. Most articles present climate change as a global problem and use images of places distant from, or only loosely related to, Croatia. The result is a narrative that feels remote and insufficiently relevant to the average reader.
Взаимодействие персуазивных и прагматических стратегий в фейковых новостях в англоязычных социальных сетях, новостях и блогах (пилотное исследование)

Целью данного пилотного исследования является изучение методов персуазивности в фейковых новостях с особым акцентом на их базовой таксономии и выявлении прагматических механизмов, таких как разговорные импликатуры, которые действуют в примерах с персуазивным характером. Предварительный анализ англоязычных социальных сетей и англоязычных блогов и новостей показывает использование схожих методов персуазивности со значительно более высокой частотой использования эмоционально заряженного языка в социальных сетях. Возможно, различия в использовании вытекают из характеристик анализируемых жанров. Наш качественный анализ показывает, что существует определенная корреляция между пренебрежением максимой количества и методами Обращения к популярности, ценностям, авторитету, Атаки на репутацию (все подкатегории, кроме обзываний), а также Манипулятивных формулировок (преувеличений).
The ‘adverb-ly adjective’ construction in English: meanings, distribution and discourse functions

We investigate a class of adjective phrases composed of a deadjectival adverb ending in -ly and an adjective head (e.g. staggeringly incompetent, absolutely terrific, fiscally responsible), a compact construction whereby two adjectives may jointly contribute to evaluative meaning. Using corpus methodologies on more than 1 million examples and relying on semantic analyses of about 1,000 instances, we propose that the construction can be divided into different semantic subtypes, including Degree (deeply disturbing), Focus (utterly ridiculous), Manner (delightfully performed), Reaction (strangely compelling), Topical (historically inaccurate) and Epistemic (intuitively obvious), among others. Using this typology, we investigate the relative distribution of each subtype across several registers of written English. We found a high frequency of the Reaction subtype in book, film and art reviews, and we suggest a discourse-functional explanation for this, linked to the perceived value of originality in expressive writing. This investigation reveals the power of semantically informed, corpus methodologies to shed light on the distribution of specific constructions.
The interplay of conceptual metaphors and evaluation in press reports on the AUKUS agreement

Известно, что метафоры обладают оценочными значениями, но остается невыясненным, как различные типы метафор, а также различные жанры дискурса влияют на формирование этих значений. Чтобы частично ответить на этот вопрос, наше исследование нацелено на выявление связи между концептуальными метафорами и оценкой в статьях широкоформатных австралийских газет и таблоидов, посвященных альянсу AUKUS – трехстороннему пакту о партнерстве в области безопасности между Австралией, Великобританией и США. Данные включают австралийские новостные и публицистические статьи, собранные из Nexis Uni через электронную библиотеку Университета Гранады в период с 15 сентября 2021 года по 31 октября 2021 года. В исследовании используется параметрический подход к оценке. Методология включает аннотацию метафор в соответствии с параметрами креативности/ конвенциональности, а также изучение их исходных и целевых областей. Количественный анализ выявил связь между типами метафор (конвенциональными и креативными) и характеристиками их оценки (полярностью и эксплицитностью), которые зависят от жанра корпуса и тематики контента, в котором используются метафоры. Кроме того, результаты свидетельствуют о том, что негативная эмотивность является преобладающим оценочным компонентом метафор в обоих типах газет. Качественный анализ показал, что концептуализации метафор чередуются между биологическими и механистическими образами мира, при этом доминирующие области метафор практически односторонне используются как в широкоформатных изданиях, так и в таблоидах. Выводы исследования показывают, что сложные отношения между метафорой и оценкой следует интерпретировать одновременно в свете жанра и темы текста, а не по отдельности.
Investigating Appraisal and the language of evaluation in fake news corpora

Abstract The present corpus study, which is grounded in Appraisal Theory, investigates evaluative language use in fake news in English. The primary aim is to find out how and why, if at all, evaluative meanings are construed differently in fake news compared to genuine news. The secondary aim is to explore potential differences between types of fake news based on contextual factors. The data are from two carefullydesigned corpora containing both fake and genuine news: a single-authored corpus and a multi-authored corpus. Both corpora contain false information that is meant to deceive, but they also differ from each other in terms of register, genre and the motivational goals of the authors. Through qualitative and quantitative analyses, we show that there are systematic differences in the occurrence of Appraisal expressions across fake and genuine news, with Appraisal being more common in the former. However, the exact nature of the affective, dialogic and modal expression of fake news is influenced by contextual factors that, so far, have largely been ignored in fake news research. Therefore, the study has important implications for the development of fake news detection systems based on data sources of different kinds, a task which is in grave need of the input of corpus linguists.
Breach of pacta sunt servanda: A corpus-assisted analysis of newspaper discourse on the AUKUS agreement

The AUKUS agreement, a strategic pact between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, primarily aimed to facilitate Australia's acquisition of eight nuclearpowered submarines from the US and Britain. This agreement led to the abrupt termination of a previous contract with France's state-owned Naval Group. This article examines the language used in media coverage of the AUKUS agreement in newspapers from various Anglophone and Asian countries. Employing a combination of Sentiment Analysis (Crossley et al., 2017) and Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (Partington, 2013; Gillings et al., 2023), we focus on identifying key linguistic patterns, themes, and the sentiment embedded in the discourse. Our findings indicate a general positive assessment of AUKUS in the Anglophone media, contrasted with negative portrayals in Chinese publications. Moreover, the analysis of linguistic components such as adjectives, nouns, and verbs reveals underlying complexities and conflicting viewpoints within the Anglophone discourse itself. By applying Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies, we uncover the contextual and linguistic factors that shape these diverse perspectives.
Engagement and constructiveness in online news comments in English and Russian

Abstract: We investigate the relationship between Engagement and constructiveness in online news comments by analyzing the frequency and type of Engagement expressions in a corpus of English and Russian comments, following the Appraisal framework. The comments in question, 10,000 words in each language, are posted in response to opinion articles in the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail and the Russian online news channel RT. In the context of online news comments, users generally characterize constructive comments as posts that intend to create a civil dialogue through remarks that are relevant to the article and not intended to provoke an emotional response. Through quantitative and qualitative analyses, we conclude that the language of constructive comments is more explicitly subjective in both languages. The main difference in the use of Engagement expressions in constructive and non-constructive comments is along the lines of certainty/uncertainty and reliability/unreliability. As for cross-linguistic differences, it seems that English constructive comments place emphasis on the reliability of a commenter’s knowledge while Russian constructive comments employ more modals of necessity, which have a prescriptive function.

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the interplay between hypocrisy and construction of news values as related to the newspaper coverage of the current transition in the energy sector in The New York Times and Nezavisimaya Gazeta. In the introduction to this study, we determine the extent to which the content in these cross-linguistic texts draws upon similar and distinct themes to construct certain news values. Then the focus shifts to the textual representations of news values created by the collocation climate change in the English and Russian texts as the central factor that drives the transition in the energy sector, according to the above media. What is also discussed is which news values are used to facilitate democratic cooperation and acceptance of these narratives by the public. To fulfill the first objective of singling out the salient themes in the two corpora, we turn to the methodology borrowed from Baker and Vessey (2018), which is useful to manually create categories that describe the salient themes in the discourse. The second methodology is represented with the framework for a linguistic analysis of news discourse by Bednarek and Caple (2012, 2017) and Bednarek at al. (2021) that will provide the means to find out what values are emphasized, rare or absent (backgrounded) in the context of analyzed keywords. Both newspapers foreground climate change as the main trigger of energy transition, which is represented through negativity news value, while The New York Times emphasizes the positivity of the renewable technologies. The urgency of introducing green technology is emphasized as well with the help of the news values of superlativeness and impact in The New York Times. The mechanism of hypocrisy in the media may be operating similarly to that of manipulation along the lines of positivity/negativity news values in combination with the foregrounding/backgrounding of necessary information.
Cross-Level Semantic Similarity in Newswire Texts and Software Code Comments: Insights from Serbian Data in the AVANTES Project

This paper presents the Serbian datasets developed within the project Advancing Novel Textual Similarity-based Solutions in Software Development – AVANTES, intended for the study of Cross-Level Semantic Similarity (CLSS). CLSS measures the level of semantic overlap between texts of different lengths, and it also refers to the problem of establishing such a measure automatically. The problem was first formulated about a decade ago, but research on it has been sparse and limited to English. The AVANTES project aims to change this through the study of CLSS in Serbian, focusing on two different text domains – newswire and software code comments – and on two text length combinations – phrase-sentence and sentence-paragraph. We present and compare two newly created datasets, describing the process of their annotation with fine-grained semantic similarity scores, and outlining a preliminary linguistic analysis. We also give an overview of the ongoing detailed linguistic annotation targeted at detecting the core linguistic indicators of CLSS.

This paper investigates the news values (Bednarek – Caple 2012; 2014; 2017) which are foregrounded in the specialized corpus of the newspaper articles on the COVID-19 pandemic. The news values are seen as values that exist in and are constructed through discourse (Bednarek – Caple 2014). We collected our data from the Russian newspaper Nezavisimaya Gazeta in the period of October-December 2020. Our methodology included two stages: In the first stage, we singled out the top 100 most frequent words and 100 keywords by using the Wordsmith Tool. To obtain a list of keywords, we created a reference corpus - a specialized corpus of a similar size as a source corpus with the news discourse in politics which did not include the topic of the pandemic. We then semantically annotated 200 words from both lists based on the USAS model (Archer et al. 2002), labeled them according to the discoursive fields of the USAS model, and classified them within the taxonomy of the news values that is based on the framework of the Discoursive News Values Analysis (Bednarek – Caple 2012; 2014; 2017). The above methods yielded the following results: The newspaper reporting on the coronavirus disease focused primarily on Superlativeness, Impact, and Proximity news values, while Personalization, Negativity, and Unexpectedness were backgrounded in the corpus. This means that the number of victims impacted by the disease, the territorial closeness where the victims were situated and the economic consequences of the crisis were in the spotlight of reporting that we analyzed.
