Preference for Complexity and Asymmetry Contributes to Elaboration in Divergent Thinking
2019 · ARTICLE · en
The study continues the exploration of the contribution of creative perception to creative potential. Creative potential was operationalized as divergent thinking and measured by the Abbreviated Torrance Test for Adults. Creative perception was operationalized as a preference for complexity and asymmetry and was assessed by a standard Barron-Welsh Art Scale. Sixty-five undergraduate college students participated in the study. Preference for complexity and asymmetry was found to make a measurable contribution to the elaboration trait of divergent thinking. This finding suggests that in addition to the process, product, person, place, persuasion, and potential perspectives, creativity construct can be evaluated from the standpoint of creative perception.
Bilingualism and Creativity
2018 · CHAPTER · en
This chapter provides an overview of empirical research on the relationship between bilingualism and creativity. It focuses on the creative performance of bilingual and monolingual children and adults. After reviewing the empirical findings, the chapter discusses their methodological issues and provides their theoretical interpretation. One of the major methodological glitches contaminating not only bilingual creativity research, but also bilingualism research at large, arises from a procedure that assigns participants to bilingual and monolingual groups. Most research investigating a relationship between bilingualism and creativity uses a cross-sectional design, which can be subsequently divided in between- and within-group designs. The impact of bilingualism on creativity is mediated by the effects of bicultural experience. The relationship between bilingualism and creativity becomes the spurious consequence of the confounding variables. There is evidence that bilingualism results in more elaborate cognitive structures and/or functioning. Lambert suggested that bilingualism often entails repeated switching from one language to another and constant dealing with several code systems.
Creative problem solving strategies differ across cultures
2018 · CHAPTER · en
In contemporary world, creativity and innovation assume key positions in political, economic, and social spheres. Policymakers recognize creative education as a potential investment in their country’s future. Business organizations place innovation among the major leadership skills. A growing body of governmental policies and corporate training programs aim at nurturing creative potential. In this regard, it is important to recognize that those policies and programs developed in one particular cultural context may not be effectively applied in the others. No doubt, creative activity is inherent to human nature and therefore it earns recognition in all areas of human enterprise across all cultures. However, the manifestation of creative potential might differ in various cultural groups.
Does the eye of the beholder construct beauty? Contributions of self-efficacy factors to divergent thinking traits
2017 · ARTICLE · en
The study initiated a project exploring a contribution of creative perception to creative behavior. This study investigated the factors in creative self-perception contributing to creative potential. Creative potential was operationalized as divergent thinking and measured by the Abbreviated Torrance Test for Adults. Creative self-perception was operationalized as creative self-efficacy and assessed by Khatena-Torrance Creative Perception Inventory. Undergraduate college students’ creative self-efficacy was found to make a reliable and measurable contribution to their divergent thinking performance. Specifically, fluency was predicted by initiative and intellectuality, originality – by initiative, and flexibility – by environmental sensitivity and self-strength. These findings suggested that in addition to process, product, person, place, persuasion, and potential perspectives, creativity construct could be evaluated from a standpoint of creative perception.
Language Mediated Concept Activation in Bilingual Memory Facilitates Cognitive Flexibility
2017 · ARTICLE · en
This is the first attempt of empirical investigation of language mediated concept activation (LMCA) in bilingual memory as a cognitive mechanism facilitating divergent thinking. Russian-English bilingual and Russian monolingual college students were tested on a battery of tests including among others Abbreviated Torrance Tests for Adults assessing divergent thinking traits and translingual priming (TLP) test assessing the LMCA. The latter was designed as a lexical decision priming test, in which a prime and a target were not related in Russian (language of testing), but were related through their translation equivalents in English (spoken only by bilinguals). Bilinguals outperformed their monolingual counterparts on divergent thinking trait of cognitive flexibility, and bilinguals’ performance on this trait could be explained by their TLP effect. Age of second language acquisition and proficiency in this language were found to relate to the TLP effect, and therefore were proposed to influence the directionality and strength of connections in bilingual memory.
The bilingual mind: And what it tells us about language and thought
2017 · ARTICLE · en
Using author’s own words, this monograph signifies a bilingual turn in the scientific investigation of the relationship between language and thought. This book deserves to occupy a prominent place on any shelf collecting academic literature on bi- and multilingualism, and not only there. It is an important contribution to broader fields of study such as linguistics and cognitive psychology. The book is written for scholars working in both fields, and the arguments presented throughout the book would require substantial knowledge of both fields. Thus, the book would accomplish one of the major purposes of any scholarly work: it would encourage readers to expand their knowledge base to encompass the theories and empirical findings accumulated in these fields of study. However, this book is intended for non-academic audience as well. Possibly due to the Russian literary tradition native to the author, this book is written in vivid language enriched with compound sentences, captivating subtitles, and thought provoking epigraphs. It combines virtually encyclopedic knowledge equipped with an extensive bibliography and nonstandard perspectives on major theories in linguistics. With respect to the latter, the book presents a fresh re-reading of salient theorists such as Humboldt, Sapir, Whorf, Vygotsky, and Bakhtin.
Введение программы билингвального и творческого образования в учебный план российских школ
2016 · ARTICLE · en
The roles of rarity and organization of stimulus material in divergent thinking
2016 · ARTICLE · en
This study examines the effects of rarity and organization of stimulus material on divergent thinking. Divergent thinking was assessed by the Unusual Uses test, in which participants had to generate as many uses as possible for a wooden ruler. Participants were primed with either rare or common ideas which were presented either in three consequent sets, or simultaneously in one set. We found a significant effect of rarity on originality. With regard to originality, participants primed with rare stimuli significantly outperformed their counterparts primed with common stimuli. We also found a significant effect of organization on fluency. With regard to this parameter, participants primed with the distributed stimulus set significantly outperformed their counterparts primed with the simultaneous set. Finally, we found marginally significant interactive effect of rarity and organization on fluency and originality. Participants who were primed with rare stimuli in distributed sets tended to obtain higher fluency and originality scores than participants in other groups.
Cognitive Poetry: Theoretical framework for the application of cognitive psychology techniques to poetic text
2016 · ARTICLE · en
This article presents a theoretical framework for the author’s experimental work in contemporary poetry, which has received a term cognitive poetry. In contrast to cognitive poetics, which applies the principles of cognitive psychology to interpret poetic texts, cognitive poetry applies these principles to produce poetic texts. The theoretical considerations of cognitive poetry are based on the assumption that one of the major purposes of creative work is to elicit aesthetical reaction in the beholder. The aesthetical reaction to the poetic texts could be achieved via their satiation with multiple meanings presented through multiple sensory modalities. Cognitive poetry employs techniques developed in cognitive psychology to explicitly address cognitive processes underlying construction of multiple conceptual planes. The following techniques are discussed: priming, Stroop effect, multimodal and multilingual presentations. The applications of these techniques are illustrated with examples of poetic texts produced by the author.
The effect of mood induction and language of testing on bilingual creativity
2016 · ARTICLE · en
This study explores the hypothesis that language of testing and mood states can influence creativity in bilinguals. Arabic-English bilingual speakers were induced into positive or negative mood states using film clips and recall-of-events procedures. Then, participants’ creativity was assessed with the Abbreviated Torrance Test for Adults. Participants were tested in either English or Arabic. A Picture Naming Test revealed English as participants’ stronger language and Arabic as their weaker language. Testing in English was found to enhance verbal fluency and originality, as compared to testing in Arabic. Most importantly, an interactive effect of induction (positive, negative) and language of testing (English, Arabic) on creativity emerged. The results revealed two conditions beneficial for participants’ nonverbal originality: a positive mood state when tested in English and a negative mood state when tested in Arabic. These results are discussed in light of the interactive effect of mood induction and linguistic context (stronger vs. weaker) on an individual’s creativity.
