Does corporate governance improve employees’ innovative performance? A knowledge sharing and absorptive capacity perspective
2026 в печати · ARTICLE · en
Purpose Effective knowledge governance mechanisms are essential for driving digital transformation and implementing Industry 4.0, both of which are critical for building sustainable competitive advantage. Drawing on the Resource-Based View and Knowledge-Based View, the purpose of this study is to open the “black box” of corporate knowledge governance by empirically examining how it enhances employees’ innovative performance. Specifically, the authors test the sequential mediating roles of employees’ knowledge-sharing behaviors and their absorptive capacity. Design/methodology/approach Using a time-lagged, multi-source data set collected from diverse industries in Saudi Arabia, the authors used partial least squares structural equation modeling to test the proposed model. Findings The results of this study demonstrate that corporate knowledge governance has a significant positive effect on employees’ innovative performance. Furthermore, the analysis confirms that knowledge sharing, and individual absorptive capacity positively mediate this relationship. Importantly, the findings of this study also support the sequential mediation effect, showing that corporate knowledge governance fosters knowledge sharing, which in turn strengthens absorptive capacity, ultimately leading to enhanced innovative performance. Practical implications This study also offers important implications for organizational policymakers, emphasizing the need to strengthen employees’ knowledge governance to enhance their innovative performance. Originality/value This paper provides a novel perspective by examining how corporate knowledge governance shapes employees’ knowledge sharing and absorptive capacity from an individual-level viewpoint, contrasting with the predominantly organizational-level focus of existing studies.
BRICS and walls: A grey incidence analysis of scientific collaboration barriers in BRICS countries
2026 · ARTICLE · en
International scientific collaboration among BRICS countries has intensified in recent years, particularly in the field of science, technology, and innovation (STI). Yet, the underlying cultural and institutional dynamics shaping these partnerships remain underexplored, features that are key to understanding collaborative practices among such a heterogeneous group of countries. We address this gap by investigating how organizational cultural traits relate to key barriers to collaboration in cross-national academic environments. We draw our empirical insights from a novel, primary dataset consisting of 403 survey responses from researchers engaged in BRICS-based co-authorships. The questionnaire, structured on a five-point Likert scale, comprised items on organizational cultural elements (e.g., mutual trust, performance measurement schemes, information sharing, and leadership dynamics) and barriers to collaboration (e.g., administrative mismatches, divergent priorities for publication or patenting, funding limitations, cultural and language differences, and partner reliability). Grey Incidence Analysis (GIA) is employed to evaluate the strength of associations between cultural traits and collaboration barriers. Findings highlight those institutional misalignments, particularly those concerning performance measurement systems and divergent publication priorities are more critical in constraining cooperation than interpersonal or intercultural differences. While trust and communication practices matter, structural incompatibilities related to administrative frameworks and governance policies emerged as the most impactful elements shaping collaborative dynamics. By revealing how governance alignment and institutional harmonization can strengthen innovation performance through enhanced efficiency of joint R&D alliances, accelerated co-patenting and technology licensing, and more effective knowledge-transfer processes, these findings provide actionable insights for both researchers and policymakers. In practical terms, they support the development of STI policy actions that promote more inclusive, resilient, and culturally attuned scientific cooperation within and beyond the BRICS bloc.
Navigating frictions and drivers in international research collaboration – the case of BRICS nations
2026 · ARTICLE · en
International research collaboration plays an increasingly important role in shaping global scientific agendas. Yet limited empirical attention has been given to how these dynamics unfold in emerging economies. This paper investigates the effects of collaboration frictions, execution challenges, strategic incentives, and trust asymmetries on scientific outcomes in international research collaborations among BRICS academics. Drawing on transaction cost economics, organizational behavior, and process-based trust theory, we develop and test a structural model using survey data from 396 respondents engaged in international collaborative research. Scientific outcomes are defined as tangible and strategic outputs such as technological innovations, R&D infrastructure, and institutional agreements. Contrary to expectations, execution challenges are positively associated with scientific outcomes, suggesting that operational complexity may reflect innovation ambition rather than dysfunction. Strategic incentives emerge as the strongest positive predictor of scientific outcomes. Trust asymmetries, though not directly associated with outcomes, significantly moderate collaboration mechanisms—attenuating the positive influence of strategic incentives and weakening the positive association between execution challenges and scientific outcomes under relational imbalance, while indicating that the relationship between collaboration frictions and scientific outcomes varies across trust conditions. These results challenge conventional assumptions that prioritize friction-free coordination, instead highlighting how relational imbalances can distort collaboration dynamics. The study contributes to a more context-sensitive understanding of research governance in the Global South and offers practical insights into designing resilient, equitable partnerships in complex environments.
Artificial intelligence and tacit knowledge in radio content production
2026 · ARTICLE · en
Purpose This study explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming tacit knowledge practices and shared leadership in radio broadcasting – a sector characterized by creativity, spontaneity and strong audience engagement. The aim is to assess whether AI can complement or replicate the human dimensions of knowledge sharing in cultural and media organizations. Design/methodology/approach Grounded in Media Richness Theory (MRT), the study adopts a qualitative methodology based on semi-structured interviews with professionals from the Italian radio industry. The empirical material was analysed through thematic analysis to identify key dimensions and tensions in the relationship between AI systems and human expertise. Findings The findings highlight a complex interplay: while AI enhances efficiency and content personalization, it falls short in reproducing tacit knowledge dimensions such as empathy, creativity and improvization. Moreover, the integration of AI reshapes professional roles and leadership structures, revealing the value of non-hierarchical, shared leadership in sustaining knowledge flows within high-creativity contexts. Research limitations/implications The qualitative design limits generalizability; future studies could integrate quantitative or cross-cultural comparisons to validate and broaden insights. Practical implications The study provides actionable recommendations for media organizations undergoing digital transformation, emphasizing the need to preserve human expertise, redesign workflows to balance automation with creativity and foster shared leadership. Social implications The findings suggest that maintaining authentic human–audience connections is vital to sustaining cultural diversity and emotional engagement in an era of increasing automation. Originality/value This study extends knowledge management frameworks into the creative industries, an underexplored domain where embodied and experiential knowledge is central. By applying MRT to AI-mediated broadcasting, it introduces a novel perspective on how automation interacts with tacit knowledge and performative leadership.
FinTech and the green transition: Exploring pathways to ignite innovation for carbon neutrality in global supply chains
2026 · ARTICLE · en
This article comprehensively evaluates the critical role of FinTech in promoting carbon neutrality and green logistics practices in global supply chains. In our study, using bibliometric analysis, social network analysis and natural language processing (NLP) methods, we evaluate the potential of FinTech innovations to increase traceability, transparency and efficiency in supply chain processes. In this study, in which we examined the ability of FinTech to finance green investments and low-carbon projects, it was investigated how technologies can develop more effective strategies in projects aimed at carbon neutrality. While the analyses reveal the potential of FinTech to reduce the use of paper and thus the demand for resources by increasing the spread of digital transactions, it also emphasizes that the environmental impacts of increasing energy consumption should be considered. The study highlights the importance of the energy mix that secures FinTech operations and the potential of the renewable energy balance in some countries. Social network analyses have identified countries, institutions and researchers that play central cooperation roles in the field of FinTech and green logistics, providing strategic data on information flow and innovation centers. These analyses show that countries that have adopted the Green Deal such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands have demonstrated strong cooperation in the fields of energy transformation, sustainable agriculture and clean industry, while important partnerships with major emitters such as China, the USA and India and Turkey's strategic cooperation with EU countries, the USA, Brazil, South Korea and Russia reveal the value of advancing global sustainability. In terms of key findings, it shows that carbon neutrality processes are centered around concepts such as 'Impact' and 'Performance' and that these factors play a key role in determining the success of carbon neutrality in global supply chains. The study provides a roadmap in key areas such as financial strategy, governance, innovation, and cost management, guiding companies to develop strategies that can contribute to reducing global carbon emissions by balancing their environmental responsibilities with economic sustainability. In this context, it is stated that the integration of FinTech into supply chain financing processes can help businesses achieve these goals. This study, which analyzes the role of FinTech in green logistics, highlights innovative solutions and collaboration opportunities in achieving sustainability and carbon neutrality goals in global supply chains, and provides an important basis for future research.
Mind the gap: unveiling the advantages and challenges of artificial intelligence in the healthcare ecosystem
2025 · ARTICLE · en
Purpose This work provides an overview of academic articles on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. It delves into the innovation process, encompassing a two-stage trajectory of exploration and development followed by dissemination and adoption. To illuminate the transition from the first to the second stage, we use prospect theory (PT) to offer insights into the effects of risk and uncertainty on individual decision-making, which potentially lead to partially irrational choices. The primary objective is to discern whether clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) can serve as effective means of “cognitive debiasing”, thus countering the perceived risks. Design/methodology/approach This study presents a comprehensive systematic literature review (SLR) of the adoption of clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) in healthcare. We selected English articles dated 2013–2023 from Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed, found using keywords such as “Artificial Intelligence,” “Healthcare” and “CDSS.” A bibliometric analysis was conducted to evaluate literature productivity and its impact on this topic. Findings Of 322 articles, 113 met the eligibility criteria. These pointed to a widespread reluctance among physicians to adopt AI systems, primarily due to trust-related issues. Although our systematic literature review underscores the positive effects of AI in healthcare, it barely addresses the associated risks. Research limitations/implications This study has certain limitations, including potential concerns regarding generalizability, biases in the literature review and reliance on theoretical frameworks that lack empirical evidence. Originality/value The uniqueness of this study lies in its examination of healthcare professionals’ perceptions of the risks associated with implementing AI systems. Moreover, it addresses liability issues involving a range of stakeholders, including algorithm developers, Internet of Things (IoT) manufacturers, communication systems and cybersecurity providers.
Entrepreneurial ecosystem as a spatially fluid concept: new territorial perspectives on entrepreneurship
2025 · ARTICLE · en
Although the concept of entrepreneurial ecosystems (EE) is inherently spatial, the actual spatiality of these productive structures has been largely assumed rather than defined based on its formative processes. The oversimplification of the spatiality of EE seems to be a function of empirical reliance on available data, a situation that has generated broadly accepted definitions that delineate EE as fixed territories (be they cities, regions or even countries). Although important insights have been derived from such approaches, this has also hampered a fine-grained scrutiny on the fluidity of EE spatiality—especially along the course of EE evolutionary trajectories. Although most of its components are tied to regional territories, EE are not isolated spatial systems with no outside connections. Accordingly, addressing entrepreneurial ecosystems as such can cause an inadequate comprehension of how entrepreneurship-oriented relationships are organized between EE or between EE and the “hinterland.” These are the motivations that led us to come up with the Special Issue “Exogenous linkages of and between entrepreneurial ecosystems: Perspectives from Interregional and Global connectedness.” In this editorial, we present the articles included in this Special Issue and propose the idea of EE as “spatially-fluid” structures which affect the dynamics of EE configurations and, ultimately, their respective evolutionary trajectories.
The Critical Mediator Role of Process Management for Effective Industry 4.0 Implementation in SMEs
2025 · ARTICLE · en
This article investigates the pivotal role of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) process management (PM) in leveraging human resources (HR) and operational processes to align with strategic objectives and organizational structures, ultimately achieving competitive advantage. This article targeted small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing and service sectors in Istanbul, Turkey. Using a simple random sampling technique, we invited 475 firms to participate in a survey, yielding 207 usable responses. The data analysis was conducted in three stages: descriptive statistical analysis to illustrate the characteristics of the participating companies and respondents; confirmatory factor analysis to test the measurement models and ensure they fit the data; and causal analysis to evaluate the hypothesized relationships among the study's constructs. The findings reveal that PM serves as a critical mediator role in the successful implementation of I4.0. Specifically, the article identifies three primary goals in the I4.0 adoption process: strategic improvement, competitiveness, and organizational fit. Effective PM impacts these objectives through two major areas: HR and operations. This article highlights how I4.0 PM can act as a catalyst in the digital transformation of SMEs, ensuring that HR and operations are effectively harnessed to drive strategic change and organizational adaptation, and enhanced competitiveness.
How innovation community embeddedness impacts firms’ innovation performance: Evidence from the global 3D printing industry
2025 · ARTICLE · en
The acceleration of digitalization and networking in the global landscape has been prompting organizations to connect into innovation communities beyond geographic boundaries within innovation ecosystems. These communities, consisting of firms that collaborate frequently, serve as a vital sub-environment for co-innovation and value creation. Despite the significant role played by these innovation communities, the impact of a firm’s embeddedness within these communities on its innovation performance remains underexplored. This paper addresses this gap by examining the effects of both within-community and cross-community embeddedness on firm innovation, with a specific focus on the contingency of collaboration complementarity. We introduce a conceptual model analyzing the effects of both relational and structural embeddedness within and across communities. An empirical study is conducted using 22 years of panel data from the global 3D printing industry. We construct patent collaboration networks among 6,109 relevant organizations over 5-year windows and identify innovation communities in each network through topological clustering algorithms. A negative binomial regression model is employed to test our hypotheses. Our findings reveal that firms benefit from both within-community and cross-community embeddedness. Notably, firms with higher collaboration complementarity experience greater benefits from within-community relational embeddedness and cross-community structural embeddedness, while those with lower complementarity gain more from cross-community relational embeddedness. This research enriches the innovation ecosystem literature by introducing an innovation community perspective and highlighting how embeddedness, coupled with collaboration orientation, drives firm-level innovation. Additionally, it offers insights into how firms can leverage collaborations and optimize their positions within innovation ecosystems to enhance their innovation performance.
Doing science an approach to a comprehensive assessment of the business climate for science and technology
2025 · ARTICLE · en
Assessment of science and technology has become widespread in policy making to measure the impact of public funding, align respective policy portfolios and initiate changes in the national institutional environment. In that respect, evaluations of different scope, shape and size and for different purposes are developed and implemented. Such exercises mainly focus on institutions or projects with some consideration of the surrounding framework conditions. Broader assessments at a country level are mainly build on macro indicators derived from national statistics with the framework conditions for research only fragmentarily covered. The approach described in the paper is a survey-based bottom-up assessment by the managers of research institutions of the framework conditions relevant for undertaking scientific activities. It introduces a composite “Doing Science” indicator which consists of such dimensions as human resources, funding, research equipment, information infrastructure, research cooperation, research results and their commercialization, engagement with society, and institutional conditions. The approach delivers a realistic assessment of the attractiveness and suitability of the country's science base to generate scientific results and achieve impact on economy and society, and may serve as a model feedback-based policy evaluation tool for decision makers worldwide.
