The impact of university-industry engagement and the rise of competency transfer partnerships

2025 в печати · ARTICLE · en

University-industry engagement has fostered innovation, economic growth, and social transformation. This article explores the evolving landscape of university-industry collaborations, emphasizing the shift from traditional technology transfer mechanisms to structured skill and competencies transfer partnerships. These partnerships foster knowledge co-creation, capacity building, and long-term strategic engagement in emerging technology fields such as artificial intelligence and sustainable technologies. Furthermore, the article discusses how universities serve as central nodes connecting academic research, industry needs, and public policy initiatives through innovation ecosystems and hub-and-spoke models. Key challenges in such collaborations include flexible governance structures, aligning institutional interests, and the integration of artificial intelligence into knowledge transfer. By presenting empirical and conceptual perspectives, this special issue aims to increase understanding of the impact of university-industry interactions and provide guidance for policymakers, academics and managers in this complex yet transformative domain. Future research directions are also proposed, considering the current significant challenges in the context of university-industry engagement.

Being Innovative or Being on the Safe Side - Managing the Risk of Failure

2025 · PREPRINT · en

Innovation has long been at the center of debates in economics, management, and organizational studies. However, innovation is never free of uncertainty and risk. Every act of innovation implies a departure from established paths and a willingness to embrace the unknown. From the beginning it's never clear if there is an audience which appreciates the innovation. This inherent exposure to uncertainty gives rise to the central dilemma of this collection: whether to be innovative or to play it safe, and how to manage the inevitable risk of failure. The ways in which organizations and societies face this dilemma are profoundly shaped by culture. Cultural values and institutional norms determine how risk is perceived, how uncertainty is tolerated, and how failure is interpreted. Failure, in particular, is at the heart of this discussion. It can be understood as both a barrier and an opportunity. Beyond cultural meanings and institutional incentives, risk itself emerges as a multifaceted phenomenon. It involves measurable probabilities and uncertainties, as well as narratives of trust, legitimacy, and responsibility. This interplay between ambition and prudence highlights the importance of striking a balance. Innovation cannot advance if all risks are avoided, but reckless exposure to uncertainty can threaten the very foundations of organizational and social stability. This collection seeks to explore these dilemmas by bringing together diverse and complementary perspectives. The volumedemonstrates, how organizational cultures shape behavior in the face of uncertainty, and how societies seek to balance ambition and responsibility. Altogether, the Work underscores the journey from culture to balance: beginning with the cultural foundations of risk-taking, moving through the mechanisms that reward experimentation, addressing the strategic problem of defining acceptable levels of risk, and culminating in the societal task of punishing innovation with safety.

Shaping ESG modes through intellectual capital: a strategic framework for corporate sustainability and innovation

2025 в печати · ARTICLE · en

Purpose This study investigates the relationship between the ESG (environment, social and governance) modes of companies and their innovation activities from the perspective of intellectual capital. Design/methodology/approach A three-stage process was used to analyze a dataset of 1,267 companies from knowledge-intensive industries. In the first stage, principal component analysis was applied to identify the types of ESG-related activities. Next, using cluster analysis, we identified patterns or modes of ESG-related behavior. Third, the identified clusters were compared in terms of their innovation-related behavior. Findings Compared to companies that demonstrated low ESG engagement, enterprises that have adopted comprehensive ESG strategies were found to be more likely to foster innovation and thus achieve sustainable competitive advantages. Our results highlight the particular importance of relational capital in stakeholder collaboration and knowledge sharing. Research limitations/implications While measuring ESG and innovation at the corporate level presents inherent challenges, this study contributes positively by offering a structured categorization of ESG modes, enabling more precise and meaningful comparisons. Our framework reduces ambiguity in assessing ESG-innovation dynamics and provides a solid foundation for future research. Moreover, the study opens exciting avenues for exploration, such as investigating the causal relationship between ESG engagement and innovation outcomes. Future research can build on these insights to examine how specific ESG models drive distinct innovation characteristics, particularly in developing economies and among SMEs, thereby enriching the global understanding of sustainable corporate strategies. Practical implications The study’s findings provide actionable insights for companies, policymakers, and other stakeholders on strategically integrating ESG and innovation. Businesses can leverage these insights to better align their ESG and innovation strategies, recognizing the critical role of relational and structural capital. Fragmented ESG communication yields limited value compared to cohesive strategies that foster external collaboration. Policymakers, in turn, should link innovation incentives to broader ESG strategies, ensuring a holistic integration that encompasses all ESG dimensions to enhance long-term competitiveness and sustainability. Social implications Adopting a broad ESG approach, rather than focusing on isolated aspects, is crucial for fostering sustainable innovation and generating societal benefits. Companies should assess ESG holistically, considering environmental, social and governance dimensions to maximize synergies with innovation. Stakeholder engagement and external cooperation are essential for developing effective and inclusive ESG initiatives. Furthermore, greater emphasis should be placed on the social dimension of ESG, which remains underdeveloped in many organizations. Future research could explore how small and medium-sized enterprises navigate this relationship and examine regional differences to better understand the social impact of ESG and innovation. Originality/value The results offer meaningful insights for corporate strategy, including the need for a holistic approach to intellectual capital management in ESG-driven innovation. In order to promote long-term sustainability and value creation, policymakers should encourage the alignment of innovation incentives with broader ESG frameworks.

The hidden machinery of entrepreneurial culture: a data mining approach of ecosystem-level drivers

2025 в печати · ARTICLE · en

Purpose This study investigates the main contextual determinants of entrepreneurial culture (EC) in emerging ecosystems, interpreting EC as an intangible resource that affects the dynamics of Intellectual Capital within entrepreneurial ecosystems. It analyzes how factors based on the pillars of such ecosystems influence perceptions regarding structural conditions associated with creativity and innovation in a given region. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative data mining approach was applied to survey data from 193 ventures funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation in Brazil, considering six EE pillars: financial support, regulatory environment, government assistance, infrastructure, social factors and education and training. After preprocessing and feature selection, classification was performed using a combination of machine learning techniques, evaluated through fivefold cross-validation with accuracy and ROC curve. A sensitivity analysis, based on feature exclusion and performance comparison, further validated the robustness of the predictive approach. Findings The feature importance analysis revealed that the most influential factors of an EC in the ecosystem were social perceptions of entrepreneurship, financial accessibility and physical infrastructure conditions. These elements indicate a strong interplay between EC and elements associated with human, structural, and relational manifestations of intellectual capital in the dynamics of entrepreneurial ecosystems. Originality/value This study contributes conceptually by demonstrating that elements traditionally viewed as supporting structures are, in fact, core drivers of EC in ecosystems. Methodologically, it validates the use of data mining techniques to analyze and predict behavioral patterns within entrepreneurial ecosystems. From a practical standpoint, the findings inform policy interventions aimed at strengthening financing systems, infrastructure and regulatory environments, while also guiding entrepreneurs and investors in overcoming barriers to digital transformation and fostering entrepreneurial innovation.

Cross-country analysis of science, technology and innovation policies: non-covid-19 related and Covid-19 specific STI policies in OECD countries

2025 · ARTICLE · en

In OECD countries, Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) policies were seen as key aspects of coping with the Covid-19 pandemic. Now that the pandemic is over, identifying which policy mix portfolios characterised countries in terms of their non-Covid-19 related and Covid-19 specific STI policies fills a knowledge gap on changes in STI policies induced by exogenous shocks. The descriptive nature of this exercise sheds light on the emergency phase, which was addressed in different ways by countries with similar STI policy portfolios in the last decade before the pandemic. Using information on STI policy initiatives in OECD countries, this paper proposes a multidimensional analysis to classify policy initiatives based on both codes (of innovation policy themes, policy instruments and target beneficiaries) and free text policies’ descriptions. Based on text mining and clustering techniques, the multidimensional analysis highlights semantic similarities between the combinations of codes and terms, making it possible to identify policy mixes that characterise non-Covid-19 related and Covid-19 specific STI policies. The cross-country comparison draws attention to the specific policy mix portfolios implemented by countries during the pandemic. The paper contributes to the literature on innovation policy mix in terms of research methods and results in identifying STI policy portfolios and groups of countries with similar structural composition of their innovation policy portfolios, implementing a range of STI strategies in tackling the pandemic. Policy implications of the findings are discussed, with a forward-looking perspective for the analysis of post-pandemic STI policies.

Opening the Black Box: Measuring the Performance of Research Organization

2024 · ARTICLE · en

This article investigates the determinants of research organizations’ performance. A theoretical construct is built based on the traditional “environment–conduct–performance” framework applied to industrial organizations and operationalized by using information from a recent extensive survey of research organizations. From an empirical point of view, using hierarchical clustering techniques, we first underline the diversity of research organizations in terms of structure and conduct parameters (in order to better identify their “behavioral patterns”) and then investigate the link between these classifications and institute performance by means of binomial regression models. From a managerial point of view, this research could help to formulate policy and management recommendations for improving performance. This article addresses two critical issues: 1) Performance measurement of research organizations remains a challenge despite multiple efforts made by academics, research organizations, management, and policymakers. The broad range of impacts resulting from research institutes can be tacit or codified, direct or indirect, among other characteristics. In many cases, these impacts are related to humans, which makes them a) difficult to measure as such, and b) involves challenges in terms of the causalities of impacts. 2) The determinants of research organization performance remain a partial black box.

The dead end of classical innovation management and unsustainable innovation

2024 · ARTICLE · en

Innovation management emerged as an academic field, raising considerable attention among scholars and practitioners. So far, most inquiries on these matters concentrate on innovation generation, process management, and application diffusion, with little emphasis on sustainability and societal aspects. In turn, sustainable development approaches became mostly standalone research fields with little overlap with the management of innovation-related activities, commonly labelled ‘innovation management’. During the last decades, innovation management more and more followed the user-driven approach first named by Eric von Hippel in the early 2000s. However, the pure focus on users often fails to develop a systemic perspective that accounts for applications and external effects associated with social, societal, and environmental impact. The failure stems from the fact that the individual is aware of the external effects but considers personal well-being first, assuming that others will care about these effects. Thus, innovation management focuses on the individual user (customer) needs in the first instance with some more or less modest adjustment to the external effects on others. Also, companies carefully monitor innovation projects, employing sophisticated controlling instruments that force innovation managers to pay more attention to economic indicators. Thus, innovation management perceives ‘sustainability’ traditionally as the aim of achieving lasting revenues resulting from innovation activities but less in the sense of meeting grand challenges or tackling environmental issues purposefully. While we recognize the exceptional companies that align their business model closely to environmental needs abroad, environmental or grand challenges-driven innovation management is hardly implemented in many companies' innovation management. This failure generates a myopic view of how technological innovation can be achieved vis-à-vis the grand challenges we face collectively.

How TalkTalk did the walk-walk: strategic reputational repair in a cyber-attack

2024 · ARTICLE · en

Purpose Cyber-attacks that generate technical disruptions in organisational operations and damage the reputation of organisations have become all too common in the contemporary organisation. This paper explores the reputation repair strategies undertaken by organisations in the event of becoming victims of cyber-attacks. Design/methodology/approach For developing the authors’ contribution in the context of the Internet service providers' industry, the authors draw on a qualitative case study of TalkTalk, a British telecommunications company providing business to business (B2B) and business to customer (B2C) Internet services, which was a victim of a “significant and sustained” cyber-attack in October 2015. Data for the enquiry is sourced from publicly available archival documents such as newspaper articles, press releases, podcasts and parliamentary hearings on the TalkTalk cyber-attack. Findings The findings suggest a dynamic interplay of technical and rhetorical responses in dealing with cyber-attacks. This plays out in the form of marshalling communication and mortification techniques, bolstering image and riding on leader reputation, which serially combine to strategically orchestrate reputational repair and stigma erasure in the event of a cyber-attack. Originality/value Analysing a prototypical case of an organisation in dire straits following a cyber-attack, the paper provides a systematic characterisation of the setting-in-motion of strategic responses to manage, revamp and ameliorate damaged reputation during cyber-attacks, which tend to negatively shape the evaluative perceptions of the organisation's salient audience.

A phoenix rising? The regeneration of the Ghana garment and textile industry

2024 · ARTICLE · en

Some African countries’ premier industries, such as textiles, garments and agro-processing, which floundered in the face of market liberalization and stiff competition from cheap imports, are now going through regenerative changes, with some beginning to tell a cautionary tale of a leap upwards. Focusing on the Ghana garment and textile industry, we draw on a framework that integrates social practices and everyday general-purpose technologies to explore the rise, decline and regeneration of the industry. Explicating a fine analysis of how the performative reconfiguration of social practices and functional sources of innovation and technologies may combine to support innovation-driven growth, our study sheds light on how loosely connected actors within a hitherto floundering industry can learn to transform their situated practices to drive their ‘industrial regeneration’. Implications for the theory and practice of industrial regeneration are outlined.

Human machine interactions: from past to future- a systematic literature review

2024 · ARTICLE · en

Purpose This paper aims to provide insight into the evolving relationship between humans and machines, understanding its multifaceted impact on our lifestyle and landscape in the past as well as in the present, with implications for the near future. It uses bibliometric analysis combined with a systematic literature review to identify themes, trace historical developments and offer a direction for future human–machine interactions (HMIs). Design/methodology/approach To provide thorough coverage of publications from the previous four decades, the first section presents a text-based cluster bibliometric analysis based on 305 articles from 2,293 initial papers in the Scopus and Web of Science databases produced between 1984 and 2022. The authors used VOS viewer software to identify the most prominent themes through cluster identification. This paper presents a systematic literature review of 63 qualified papers using the PRISMA framework. Findings Next, the systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis revealed four major historical themes and future directions. The results highlight four major research themes for the future: from Taylorism to advanced technologies; machine learning and innovation; Industry 4.0, Society 5.0 and cyber–physical system; and psychology and emotions. Research limitations/implications There is growing anxiety among humankind that in the future, machines will overtake humans to replace them in various roles. The current study investigates the evolution of HMIs from their historical roots to Society 5.0, which is understood to be a human-centred society. It balances economic advancement with the resolution of social problems through a system that radically integrates cyberspace and physical space. This paper contributes to research and current limited knowledge by identifying relevant themes and offering scope for future research directions. A close look at the analysis posits that humans and machines complement each other in various roles. Machines reduce the mechanical work of human beings, bringing the elements of humanism and compassion to mechanical tasks. However, in the future, smart innovations may yield machines with unmatched dexterity and capability unthinkable today. Originality/value This paper attempts to explore the ambiguous and dynamic relationships between humans and machines. The present study combines systematic review and bibliometric analysis to identify prominent trends and themes. This provides a more robust and systematic encapsulation of this evolution and interaction, from Taylorism to Society 5.0. The principles of Taylorism are extended and redefined in the context of HMIs, especially advanced technologies.
