Hilbert schemes of lines and conics and automorphism groups of Fano threefolds

We discuss various results on Hilbert schemes of lines and conics and automorphism groups of smooth Fano threefolds of Picard rank 1. Besides a general review of facts well known to experts, the paper contains some new results, for instance, we give a description of the Hilbert scheme of conics on any smooth Fano threefold of index 1 and genus 10. We also show that the action of the automorphism group of a Fano threefold X of index 2 (respectively, 1) on an irreducible component of its Hilbert scheme of lines (respectively, conics) is faithful if the anticanonical class of X is very ample except for some explicit cases. We use these faithfulness results to prove finiteness of the automorphism groups of most Fano threefolds and classify explicitly all Fano threefolds with infinite automorphism group. We also discuss a derived category point of view on the Hilbert schemes of lines and conics, and use it to identify some of them.

Alpha-invariants and purely log terminal blow-ups

p‐subgroups in the space Cremona group

We prove that if X is a rationally connected threefold and G is a p‐subgroup in the group of birational selfmaps of X, then G is an abelian group generated by at most 3 elements provided that . We also prove a similar result for under an assumption that Gacts on a (Gorenstein) G‐Fano threefold, and show that the same holds for under an assumption that G acts on a G‐Mori fiber space.

Delta invariants of singular del Pezzo surfaces

We estimate δ-invariants of some singular del Pezzo surfaces with quotient singularities, which we studied ten years ago. As a result, we show that each of these surfaces admits an orbifold K\"ahler--Einstein metric.

Automorphisms of pointless surfaces

For a geometrically rational surface X over a perfect field of characteristic different from 2 that contains all roots of 1, we show that either X is birational to a product of a projective line and a conic, or the group of birational automorphisms of X has bounded finite subgroups. As an auxiliary result, we show boundedness of finite subgroups in anisotropic linear algebraic groups of bounded rank and number of connected components. Also, we provide applications to Jordan property for groups of birational automorphisms.

Kaehler-Einstein Fano threefolds of degree 22

We study the problem of existence of K\"ahler--Einstein metrics on smooth Fano threefolds of Picard rank one and anticanonical degree 22 that admit a faithful action of the multiplicative group ℂ∗. We prove that, except possibly two explicitly described cases, all such smooth Fano threefolds are K\"ahler--Einstein.

Hodge complexity for weighted complete intersections

We give lower bounds for Hodge numbers of smooth well formed Fano weighted complete intersections. In particular, we compute their Hodge complexity, that is, the maximal distance between non-trivial Hodge numbers. This allows us to classify varieties of such type whose Hodge numbers are like that of a projective space, of a curve, or of a Calabi-Yau variety of low dimension.

Coble fourfold, S_6-invariant quartic threefolds, and Wiman-Edge sextics

We construct two small resolutions of singularities of the Coble fourfold (the double cover of the four-dimensional projective space branched over the Igusa quartic). We use them to show that all S_6-invariant three-dimensional quartics are birational to conic bundles over the quintic del Pezzo surface with the discriminant curves from the Wiman-Edge pencil. As an application, we check that S_6-invariant three-dimensional quartics are unirational, obtain new proofs of rationality of four special quartics among them and irrationality of the others, and describe their Weil divisor class groups as S_6-representations.
