A measurement of ∆Γs

2024 · ARTICLE · en

Using a dataset corresponding to 9 fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018 in proton-proton collisions, the decay-time distributions of the decay modes Bs0→J/ψη′ and Bs0→J/ψπ+π− are studied. The decay-width difference between the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the Bs0 meson is measured to be ∆Γs = 0.087 ± 0.012 ± 0.009 ps−1, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Enhanced production of $\Lambda_b^0$ baryons in high-multiplicity $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13TeV

2024 · ARTICLE · en

The production rate of Λ0𝑏 baryons relative to 𝐵0 mesons in 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at a center-of-mass energy √𝑠=13 TeV is measured by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of Λ0𝑏 to 𝐵0 production cross sections shows a significant dependence on both the transverse momentum and the measured charged-particle multiplicity. At low multiplicity, the ratio measured at LHCb is consistent with the value measured in 𝑒+⁢𝑒− collisions, and increases by a factor of ∼2 with increasing multiplicity. At relatively low transverse momentum, the ratio of Λ0𝑏 to 𝐵0 cross sections is higher than what is measured in 𝑒+⁢𝑒− collisions, but converges with the 𝑒+⁢𝑒− ratio as the momentum increases. These results imply that the evolution of heavy 𝑏 quarks into final-state hadrons is influenced by the density of the hadronic environment produced in the collision. Comparisons with several models and implications for the mechanisms enforcing quark confinement are discussed.

Helium identification with LHCb

2024 · ARTICLE · en

The identification of helium nuclei at LHCb is achieved using a method based on measurements of ionisation losses in the silicon sensors and timing measurements in the Outer Tracker drift tubes. The background from photon conversions is reduced using the RICH detectors and an isolation requirement. The method is developed using pp collision data at √(s) = 13 TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment in the years 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5 fb-1. A total of around 105 helium and antihelium candidates are identified with negligible background contamination. The helium identification efficiency is estimated to be approximately 50% with a corresponding background rejection rate of up to (1012). These results demonstrate the feasibility of a rich programme of measurements of QCD and astrophysics interest involving light nuclei.

Measurement of prompt $D^+$ and $D_s^+$ production in $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV

2024 · ARTICLE · en

The production of prompt D+ and Ds+ mesons is studied in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sNN = 5.02 TeV. The data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of (1.58 ± 0.02)nb−1 is collected by the LHCb experiment at the LHC. The differential production cross-sections are measured using D+ and Ds+ candidates with transverse momentum in the range of 0 T 14 GeV/c and rapidities in the ranges of 1.5 ∗ 4.0 and –5.0 ∗ –2.5 in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass system. For both particles, the nuclear modification factor and the forward-backward production ratio are determined. These results are compared with theoretical models that include initial-state nuclear effects. In addition, measurements of the cross-section ratios between D+, Ds+ and D0 mesons are presented, providing a baseline for studying the charm hadronization in lead-lead collisions at LHC energies.

Measurement of 𝐶⁢𝑃 Violation in 𝐵0→𝜓⁡(→ℓ+⁢ℓ−)⁢𝐾0𝑆⁡(→𝜋+⁢𝜋−) Decays

2024 · ARTICLE · en

A measurement of time-dependent 𝐶⁢𝑃 violation in the decays of 𝐵0 and ¯𝐵0 mesons to the final states 𝐽/𝜓⁢(→𝜇+⁢𝜇−)⁢𝐾0𝑆, 𝜓⁡(2⁢𝑆)⁢(→𝜇+⁢𝜇−)⁢𝐾0𝑆 and 𝐽/𝜓⁢(→𝑒+⁢𝑒−)⁢𝐾0𝑆 with 𝐾0𝑆→𝜋+⁢𝜋− is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb−1 collected at a center-of-mass energy of √𝑠=13 TeV with the LHCb detector. The 𝐶⁢𝑃-violation parameters are measured to be 𝑆𝜓⁢𝐾0𝑆=0.717±0.013⁢(stat)±0.008⁢(syst) and 𝐶𝜓⁢𝐾0𝑆=0.008±0.012⁢(stat)±0.003⁢(syst). This measurement of 𝑆𝜓⁢𝐾0𝑆 represents the most precise single measurement of the CKM angle 𝛽 to date and is more precise than the current world average. In addition, measurements of the 𝐶⁢𝑃-violation parameters of the individual channels are reported and a combination with the LHCb Run 1 measurements is performed.

Measurement of the CKM angle $\gamma$ in the $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ channel using self-conjugate $D^0 \to K_S^0 h^+h^-$ decays

2024 · ARTICLE · en

A model-independent study of CP violation in B0→DK∗0 decays is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb−1 collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of s=7,8 and 13TeV. The CKM angle γ is determined by examining the distributions of signal decays in phase-space bins of the self-conjugate D→KS0h+h− decays, where h=π,K. Observables related to CP violation are measured and the angle γ is determined to be γ=(49−19+22)∘. Measurements of the amplitude ratio and strong-phase difference between the favoured and suppressed B0 decays are also presented.

Measurement of the Z boson production cross-section in pp collisions at √s=5.02 TeV

2024 · ARTICLE · en

The first measurement of the Z boson production cross-section at centre-of-mass energy s = 5.02 TeV in the forward region is reported, using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment in year 2017, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 100 ± 2 pb−1. The production cross-section is measured for final-state muons in the pseudorapidity range 2.0 4.5 with transverse momentum pT > 20 GeV/c. The integrated cross-section is determined to be σZ→μ+μ−=39.6±0.7(stat)±0.6(syst)±0.8(lumi)pb for the di-muon invariant mass in the range 60 μμ 120 GeV/c2. This result and the differential cross-section results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant. Based on a previous LHCb measurement of the Z boson production cross-section in pPb collisions at sNN = 5.02 TeV, the nuclear modification factor RpPb is measured for the first time at this energy. The measured values are 1.2−0.3+0.5 (stat) ± 0.1(syst) in the forward region (1.53 yμ∗ 4.03) and 3.6−0.9+1.6 (stat) ± 0.2(syst) in the backward region (−4.97 yμ∗ 2.47), where yμ∗ represents the muon rapidity in the centre-of-mass frame.

Observation of Cabibbo-suppressed two-body hadronic decays and precision mass measurement of the $\Omega_c^0$ baryon

2024 · ARTICLE · en

The first observation of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed Ω0𝑐→Ω−⁢𝐾+ and Ω0𝑐→Ξ−⁢𝜋+ decays is reported, using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1, collected with the LHCb detector between 2016 and 2018. The branching fraction ratios are measured to be ℬ⁡(Ω0𝑐→Ω−⁢𝐾+)ℬ⁡(Ω0𝑐→Ω−⁢𝜋+)=[6.08±0.51⁢(stat)±0.40⁢(syst)]%,ℬ⁡(Ω0𝑐→Ξ−⁢𝜋+)ℬ⁡(Ω0𝑐→Ω−⁢𝜋+)=[15.81±0.87⁢(stat)±0.44⁢(syst)±0.16⁢(ext)]%. In addition, using the Ω0𝑐→Ω−⁢𝜋+ decay channel, the Ω0𝑐 baryon mass is measured to be 𝑀⁡(Ω0𝑐)=2695.28±0.07⁢(stat)±0.27⁢(syst)±0.30⁢(ext) MeV, improving the precision of the previous world average by a factor of 4.

A search for rare B → Dμ+μ− decays

2024 · ARTICLE · en

A search for rare B → Dμ+μ− decays is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1. No significant signals are observed in the non-resonant μ+μ− modes, and upper limits of B(B0→D¯0μ+μ−)fc and fu are the fragmentation fractions of a B meson with a c and u quark respectively in proton-proton collisions. Each result is either the first such measurement or an improvement by three orders of magnitude on an existing limit. Separate upper limits are calculated when the muon pair originates from a J/ψ → μ+μ− decay. The branching fraction of Bc+→Ds+J/ψ multiplied by the fragmentation-fraction ratio is measured to be fcfu⋅B(Bc+→Ds+J/ψ)=(1.63±0.15±0.13)×10−5, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Improved measurement of CP violation parameters in $B_s^0\to J/\psi K^+K^-$ decays in the vicinty of the $\phi(1020)$ resonance

2024 · ARTICLE · en

The decay-time-dependent 𝐶⁢𝑃 asymmetry in 𝐵0𝑠→𝐽/𝜓⁡(→𝜇+⁢𝜇−)⁢𝐾+⁢𝐾− decays is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb−1, collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Using a sample of approximately 349 000 𝐵0𝑠 signal decays with an invariant 𝐾+⁢𝐾− mass in the vicinity of the 𝜙⁡(1020) resonance, the 𝐶⁢𝑃-violating phase 𝜙𝑠 is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the 𝐵0𝑠−¯𝐵0𝑠 system, Δ⁢Γ𝑠, and the difference of the average 𝐵0𝑠 and 𝐵0 meson decay widths, Γ𝑠−Γ𝑑. The values obtained are 𝜙𝑠=−0.039±0.022±0.006 rad, Δ⁢Γ𝑠=0.0845±0.0044±0.0024 ps−1, and Γ𝑠−Γ𝑑=−0.005⁢6+0.0013−0.0015±0.0014 ps−1, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with the previous LHCb analyses of this decay. These results are combined with previous independent LHCb measurements. The phase 𝜙𝑠 is also measured independently for each polarization state of the 𝐾+⁢𝐾− system and shows no evidence for polarization dependence.
