Acquisition of the nominal case system in Russian as a second language

Using written texts elicited from students with different proficiency levels, we studied the acquisition of nominal cases in Russian as a second language. We established the order in which cases were acquired (nominative, locative, accusative, genitive, instrumental, and dative), as well as certain characteristics of their acquisition trajectories. We argue that the order of acquisition is determined by two groups of factors: how essential a given case is for successful language use and how complex it is, both semantically and morphologically. Many important differences between first and second language acquisition were identified. The maturation of the case system was observed both in the number of correct forms participants produced and in error rates. The distribution of correct forms changed, gradually approaching that found for native speakers. With growth in proficiency, the incidence of different error types declined, and the relative frequency of errors more characteristic of first language acquisition increased.

The Multilingual Picture Database

The growing interdisciplinary research field of psycholinguistics is in constant need of new and up-to-date tools which will allow researchers to answer complex questions, but also expand on languages other than English, which dominates the field. One type of such tools are picture datasets which provide naming norms for everyday objects. However, existing databases tend to be small in terms of the number of items they include, and have also been normed in a limited number of languages, despite the recent boom in multilingualism research. In this paper we present the Multilingual Picture (Multipic) database, containing naming norms and familiarity scores for 500 coloured pictures, in thirty-two languages or language varieties from around the world. The data was validated with standard methods that have been used for existing picture datasets. This is the first dataset to provide naming norms, and translation equivalents, for such a variety of languages; as such, it will be of particular value to psycholinguists and other interested researchers. The dataset has been made freely available.

Discourse complexity in the light of eye-tracking: a pilot Russian language study

The paper explores the influence of discourse structure on text complexity. We assume that certain types of discourse units are easier to read than others, due to their explicit discourse structure, which makes their informational input more accessible. As a data source, we use the dataset from the MECO corpus, which contains eye movement data for 12 Russian texts read by 35 native speakers. We demonstrate that the approach relying on elementary discourse units (EDUs) can be felicitously used in the analysis of eye movement data, since fixation patterns on EDUs are similar to those on whole sentences. Our analysis has identified EDU outliers, which show shorter time of first fixation than estimated. We arranged these outliers into several groups associated with different discourse structures. First, these are statements with nominal predicates that set exposition of the text or macroproposition and, following those, EDUs that elaborate on the previous statement and signal the beginning of the narrative. Second, they are EDUs that serve as the middle component of a listing or a group of coordinated clauses or phrases. The final group represents EDUs that are part of an opposition, contrast or comparison. Discourse analysis based on EDUs has never been applied to eye movement data, so our project opens many avenues for further research of complexity of discourse structure.

The role of case syncretism in agreement attraction: a comprehension study

Many production and comprehension experiments have studied attraction errors in agreement, primarily in number (e.g. ‘The key to the cabinets were rusty’). Studies on gender agreement attraction are still sparse, especially in comprehension. We present two self-paced reading experiments on Russian focusing on the role of syncretism in this phenomenon. Russian nouns are inflected for case and number, and some forms have the same inflections (are syncretic). In several experiments on Slovak, Badecker and Kuminiak (2007) showed that both head and attractor syncretism play a role for gender agreement in production. We demonstrate for the first time that this is also the case in comprehension. The role of head noun syncretism has not been analyzed in any previous comprehension studies, also for number agreement. We conclude that syncretic forms create uncertainty, which is crucial for agreement disruption. These results are better compatible with retrieval approaches to agreement attraction. We discuss the implications of our findings for the nature of the retrieval cues used to establish morphosyntactic dependencies. The question whether case marking modulates agreement attraction in comprehension has also been addressed by Avetisyan, Lago, and Vasishth (2020) in a study on Armenian, and they found no evidence of such influence. We offer an explanation of the conflicting findings from several studies based on the syntactic constructions they used as materials.

Expanding horizons of cross-linguistic research on reading: The Multilingual Eye-movement Corpus (MECO)

Scientific studies of language behavior need to grapple with an astounding diversity of spoken languages in the world and, for reading, a further variability in writing systems. Yet the ability to form meaningful theories of reading is contingent on the availability of cross-linguistic behavioral data. This paper offers new insights into the aspects of reading behavior that are shared and those that vary systematically across languages through an investigation of eye-tracking data from 12 languages recorded during text reading. We begin with reporting a bibliometric analysis of eye-tracking studies showing that the current empirical base is insufficient for cross-linguistic comparisons. We respond to this empirical lacuna by presenting the Multilingual Eye-Movement Corpus (MECO), the product of an international multi-lab collaboration. We examine what behavioral indices differentiate between writing systems, and what measures are stable across languages. We find that readers of different writing systems vary the most in their average skipping rate (i.e. likelihood of not fixating on a word even once). In contrast, if readers do not skip a word, they tend to spend a similar average time reading it. We outline the implications of these findings for theories of reading, as well as prospective uses and development plans for MECO.

Suppression of non-selected solutions as a possible brain mechanism for ambiguity resolution in the word fragment task completion task

Dealing with ambiguity, one usually selects one meaning unconsciously and remains unaware of the alternative meanings. The brain systems dealing with multiple meanings of ambiguous stimuli are relatively well studied, while the brain processing of their non-selected meanings is relatively less investigated. The current functional MRI event-related study used a modified version of the word fragment completion task to reveal possible brain mechanisms involved in processing the non-selected meaning of ambiguous stimuli. Some noun stimuli were ambiguous, and the others were not. Adjectives created contexts strongly biasing the choice of the noun meaning in one or the other way. All ambiguous and unambiguous noun stimuli were presented twice during the experiment. It was revealed that ambiguity resolution was associated with a decrement in the BOLD signal within the right and left hippocampi. This finding supported one of the tested hypotheses assumed that non-selected meanings are actively suppressed. The similarity between this result and BOLD signal changes observed for suppression-induced forgetting for purging unwanted memories from awareness allows suggesting the general neurophysiological basis for voluntary and automatic inhibitory awareness control.

Non-canonical constructions with reflexive possessives in Russian: u-possessor constructions

Наша статья посвящена русскому выражению свой. Многие исследователи полагают, что за ним стоят две лексемы: посессивное рефлексивное местоимение, которое требует локального связывания подлежащим, и прилагательное. Однако, хотя многие примеры легко отнести к одной или другой группе, целый ряд случаев вызывает горячие споры. Так как эта проблема никогда не рассматривалась в рамках корпусного исследования, мы провели таковое в этой работе. Мы проанализировали выборку примеров, в которыхсвой стоит в именительном падеже. Самой частотной конструкцией в этой выборке оказались предложения с внешним поссессором, который вводится предлогом у. Поэтому мы изучили их более детально. Мы показали, что такие конструкции можно разделить на два типа с частично разными свойствами. В целом же мы заключили, что свой в таких конструкциях не может занимать синтаксическую позицию посессора. Семантика его также не сводится к посессивной. Скорее он является аналогом английского слова different

Оценка эмоциональной нагруженности русских существительных: различия, обусловленные гендером

Работа посвящена изучению эмотивного компонента русских существительных. Для измерения аффективных реакций использовался метод слайдера, с помощью которого участники оценивали слова по шкале valence. В ходе эксперимента была подтверждена валидность данного инструмента для оценки эмоциональной нагруженности слов, а также выявлены гендерные различия в прогнозировании реакций за свой пол и противоположный.

Одни ошибки вреднее других: роль типа и частотности орфографических ошибок в обработке слов

В последние годы в сети Интернет многократно возросло количество текстов, не подвергающихся редактуре и корректуре. Это записи в социальных сетях, чатах, форумах, статьи ряда электронных СМИ. В них часто попадаются слова с орфографическими ошибками. Соответственно, общее количество ошибочных написаний, с которыми нам приходится сталкиваться, также возрастает. Как показывают многочисленные исследования, орфографические нормы осваиваются и закрепляются в процессе чтения (например, Andrews, Hersch, 2010; Hersch, Andrews, 2012). Следовательно, часто встречающиеся ошибки оказывают непосредственное влияние на репрезентацию слов в ментальном лексиконе носителя языка. Ошибочные написания фиксируются в памяти и 1 Компьютерная лингвистика и интеллектуальные технологии: по материалам международной конференции «Диалог 2022» Москва, 15–18 июня 2022 г. получают подкрепление каждый раз, когда мы сталкиваемся с ними снова, доля встретившихся нам верных написаний при этом снижается, и неправильный вариант закрепляется в ментальном лексиконе наряду с верным (Perfetti, Hart, 2002). В соответствии с моделями дискриминативного научения (Baayen et al., 2011; Ramscar et al., 2010; Ramscar et al., 2013; Rescorla, Wagner, 1972), связь между сигналом и его значением ослабевает, если на то же значение указывает также и другой сигнал. Это в свою очередь снижает так называемое лексическое качество слова (Perfetti, 1985; 2007; Nelson et al., 2016; Perfetti, Hart, 2001). Таким образом гипотеза лексического качества объясняет, как неправильные варианты написания слова могут существенно повлиять на его репрезентацию в ментальном лексиконе, даже если они заметно менее частотны, чем правильное. Эта гипотеза изначально использовалась для того, чтобы объяснить, в каких словах мы чаще допускаем орфографические ошибки. Однако С. Рахманьян и В. Куперман предположили, что более низкое лексическое качество будет влиять и на обработку (Rahmanian, Kuperman, 2019). Они показали на материале английского языка, что слова, в которых часто встречаются ошибки, при прочих равных читаются медленнее, чем слова, в которых ошибки редки (в исследовании все слова фигурировали в правильном написании). Аналогичные результаты были затем получены на материале языков с различными типами орфографии: греческого, финского, иврита, китайского (Kuperman et al. 2021). В отдельном исследовании эта гипотеза была подтверждена на материале русского языка (Чернова и др., 2020). В этой статье также было показано, что частотность неправильных написаний влияет на скорость и точность в задании на определение орфографической правильности (где половина слов предъявляется в неправильном написании). Этот результат можно считать более ожидаемым, чем выводы экспериментов о скорости прочтения слов в правильном написании, но он окажется важным для дальнейшей дискуссии. Кроме того, Чернова с коллегами показали интересные корреляции между результатами экспериментов, использующих разные методики. Однако в этих работах не ставился вопрос о том, влияет ли на эти процессы тип орфограммы. Русский язык оптимально подходит для исследования этой проблемы, так как носители русского регулярно допускают ошибки разных типов: выбирают не ту гласную в безударном слоге, сомневаются, писать одну согласную или две и так далее. Можно ли утверждать, что все эти ошибки одинаково легко — или одинаково трудно — заметить, и важна только относительная частотность неправильных написаний, исследованная в статье (Чернова и др., 2020)? Или же тип орфограммы — отдельный фактор, возможно, даже более сильный, чем частотность? Ответу на этот вопрос посвящен наш первый эксперимент, в котором мы анализировали скорость и точность в задании на определение орфографической правильности. SOV in Russian: a corpus study

This paper analyzes the SOV order in Russian. Various hypotheses concerning its distribution were proposed in the previous functional and formal studies, but none of them became widely accepted. We tested these hypotheses on the large “Taiga” corpus and found that the main factor that triggers SOV is pronominalization: if the object is pronominal, it is highly likely to be preverbal. The absolute majority of non-pronominal objects follow the verb, although both giveness and contrastive, emphatic or narrow focus increase their (altogether very small) chances to be preverbal. Thus, the factors discussed in many previous studies play a role, but this role is extremely small. We propose a syntactic account to capture different information-structural properties of preverbal objects and the optionality of this construction.
