Non-standard numeral constructions in L2 Russian: A corpus-based study
2026 · ARTICLE · en
Aims and Research Questions: The paper investigates variation in numeral constructions in the L2 Russian speech of bilinguals from different regions of Russia. The main research questions are the following: What factors prompt variation in this domain of grammar? Can we argue that non-standard marking is motivated by contact? Methodology: We conduct a corpus-based study of seven varieties of L2 Russian. The corpora contain spontaneous spoken texts collected between the 2000s and 2020s. Data and Analysis: Data from 181 participants born between 1920 and 1997, who are native speakers of 21 languages belonging to four different families, were analyzed based on a number of sociolinguistic and linguistic parameters that were modeled using nested mixed effects logistic regression. Findings/Conclusions: We show that variation in numeral constructions is correlated with the speakers’ level of education and year of birth, the numeral type, and especially with the “collocationality” of numeral-noun combinations. The findings indicate that variation might be motivated by lower L2 proficiency and exposure to the input, but they do not provide strong evidence for contact influence. The negative correlation we found between higher “collocationality” and probability of non-standard marking supports a usage-based view of language acquisition as an experience-driven process in which frequency effects play a central role. Originality: This is the first study to provide a corpus-based analysis of this phenomenon in different varieties of L2 Russian. Implications: The findings have implications for the study of language variation in contact settings, and for the question of whether phenomena that apparently look like the result of pattern borrowing should rather be explained by other sociolinguistic and acquisitional factors that are not necessarily related to contact.
Negative existential constructions in bilingual Russian: A corpus-driven approach to variation
2026 в печати · ARTICLE · en
This paper reports on a study investigating variation in negative existential constructions in varieties of Russian spoken by bilinguals from different regions of Russia. Non-standard marking of the negated subject in such constructions is reported in the literature as a common feature of varieties of bilingual Russian and is usually explained as the result of pattern borrowing due to contact with languages that, unlike Russian, do not have any special marking of the subject in such constructions. In this study, we analyze data from seven spoken corpora of bilingual Russian and compare them to data from a spoken corpus of monolingual Russian. The results of the analysis show that pattern borrowing can account for part of the variation patterns attested in our data, but not for all of them. By applying a quantitative variationist method to data analysis, we show that variation is motivated by an interaction of multiple linguistic and extralinguistic factors, not all of which are related to language contact.
Phonological Adaptation of Russian Borrowings in Avar-Andic Languages
2026 в печати · ARTICLE · en
Aims and Research Questions: The paper investigates processes of phonological adaptation of Russian borrowings in Avar-Andic languages with an aim to determine what factors affect degrees of integration. Methodology, Data and Analysis: We analyzed Russian borrowings from ten dictionaries of Avar-Andic languages. Each borrowing was annotated and matched segment-by-segment to its corresponding Russian source lexeme. We performed a qualitative analysis of the correspondences and modeled them with a mixed effect logistic regression. Findings: The analysis demonstrates that variation in degrees of phonological adaptation depends on multiple factors, both language-internal (i.e., related to syllable structure and repair strategy preferences) and language-external (i.e., time depth of the borrowing). Originality: This is the first quantitative investigation of phonological adaptations of Russian borrowings in Avar-Andic languages. Implications: Our findings have implications for studies on language contact, and more specifically contribute to research on loanword adaptation in multilingual settings.
A corpus-driven approach to teaching academic Russian as a second language
2026 · ARTICLE · en
In teaching a language for specific purposes (LSP), a lot of attention is traditionally paid to the lexicon, which often requires a corpus-based approach. The article describes the procedure of creating an academic word list for studying Russian as a second language (L2). It offers an effective way of collecting an academic phrase bank in a specific domain. The article demonstrates typical problems concerning Russian academic vocabulary and the ways of solving them. In this paper, we suggest a methodology for extracting academic vocabulary based on a corpus of up-to-date academic texts of different genres and authors. This study resulted in the creation of an academic word list of economic vocabulary containing about 900 content words. As another applied result, we also present a training platform for L2 academic Russian in the field of economics. The platform allows users not only to explore academic vocabulary in an authentic context, but also to practice it, with or without a teacher. It offers the words and multiword expressions that are the most characteristic in the collected corpus of economic texts. The article contributes both to the field of Russian corpus linguistics and to the teaching of Russian for specific purposes.
Вариативность годов vs. лет в русских говорах: корпусное исследование
2025 · ARTICLE · ru
The presence of the genitive plural suppletive form let in the paradigm of the noun god ‘year’ distinguishes Russian from other East Slavic languages. In Russian dialects, instead of let, the dialect variant godov is sometimes used. Data from the panchronic subcorpus of the Russian National Corpus show that the form godov, which is first attested in the 15th century, was peripheral throughout the history of the Russian language. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was mainly used in non-fiction texts, while in the 19th century it was already considered as outdated or dialectal. In modern dialect data, the variant godov is highly frequent: it is present in almost half of about 2,000 contexts considered. The article aims to investigate the factors that influence the probability of using the dialect variant godov in constructions with cardinal numeral in modern dialects of Russian. The dialect variant is frequent in different dialect groups, which does not support an analysis of variation in terms of areal distribution. Moreover, variation between the two forms differs even among speakers of the same dialect, which makes the data particularly suitable to a variationist analysis. Data annotation included the following sociolinguistic parameters: gender, year of birth, and level of education. In addition, we tagged each data point according to the case form of the numeral and word order. The significance of these variables was evaluated with a mixed effect logistic regression. The results of statistical analysis showed that the probability of using the dialect form is much higher for less educated speakers as compared to more educated ones. Inverse word order and genitive case form of the numeral also increase the probability of using the dialect variant.
Preposition drop in Russian spoken by Mari and Beserman bilinguals
2025 · ARTICLE · en
Aims and Research Questions: In this paper, we present a corpus-based study of preposition drop (p-drop) in the speech of Mari-Russian and Beserman-Russian bilinguals compared to the speech of Russian monolinguals. Based on data from spoken corpora, we demonstrate that the prepositions v ‘in’, k ‘to’, s ‘with’ are omitted in the speech of bilinguals more often than in monolinguals’ speech, and propose some possible explanations for the variation attested across different bilingual speakers. Methodology: Quantitative method Data and Analysis: An analysis of variance was carried out on the spontaneous oral speech of 20 Beserman-Russian and Mari-Russian bilinguals, with a total number of tokens of approximately 166,000, in comparison with the speech of nine Russian monolinguals. Findings/Conclusions: We found that the omission of prepositions in the speech of bilinguals and monolinguals occurs in different contexts and for different reasons. In bilinguals, p-drop can possibly be explained by phonetic interference from their first language (L1), whereas monolinguals mainly omit prepositions in lexicalized expressions. A study of the influence of sociolinguistic factors showed that the older and less educated a person is, the higher the probability of p-drop in their speech; however, this effect is clearly observable only in bilinguals. Originality: This is the first corpus study of preposition drop in the Russian speech of Uralic bilinguals, considering both linguistic and sociolinguistic factors using logistic regression with nested mixed effects. Implications: The results obtained are important for studies of preposition drop in other contact varieties and for studies of language variation in general, since this phenomenon is not necessarily contact-induced: it can also be explained by sociolinguistic factors and lexicalization.
Automatic detection of natural phonological classes in Russian Sign Language
2018 · PREPRINT · en
The present paper applies Multiple Correspondence Analysis to test the validity of an existing theoretical model of the phonological system of Russian Sign Language (RSL). We show that comparing the importance of phonological features using ratio plots and MCA is a promising way of revealing non-binary oppositions in phonological systems of human languages irrespective of modality.
